ຂປລ The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) has provided advanced medical equipment to the Newborn Unit of Salavan Provincial Hospital, strengthening neonatal treatment capacity and supporting efforts to reduce newborn mortality in Laos.

A handover ceremony was held on February 12, 2026, at Salavan Provincial Hospital, attended by Deputy Minister of Health Ms. Aphone Visathep, Vice Chairman of the Salavan Provincial Administration Committee Mr. Vaenphet Lathdavong, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to the Lao PDR, Ms. Oya Yazar, and visiting Turkish professors.

Following the handover, Turkish professors conducted specialized training on neonatal treatment and intensive care for doctors and nurses at the hospital. The training focused on improving clinical skills and strengthening frontline capacity to respond to newborn emergencies.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Oya Yazar said the equipment support and training program reflect the long-standing partnership and strong spirit of cooperation between Türkiye and Laos in the health sector. She highlighted Türkiye’s previous contributions, including support for hospital construction in Pakxong District, the donation of two ambulances to the Ministry of Health, and the provision of medical equipment to the Cardiology Department of Mittaphab Hospital.

In recent years, TİKA has also supplied patient monitors, emergency ventilators, and surgical equipment to Mittaphab Hospital, while supporting rehabilitation services through donations of orthotic and prosthetic machinery and materials to the COPE Center and Centers for Medical Rehabilitation in several provinces.

On February 13, Ambassador Yazar, the TİKA delegation, and Turkish professors paid a courtesy call on Minister of Health, Ms. Baykham Khattiya in Vientiane. Both sides welcomed the successful newborn health training and the equipment support to Salavan Provincial Hospital, agreeing to continue cooperation on capacity building for Lao medical staff and expand health collaboration between the two countries.

Earlier, TİKA, in partnership with the Department of Healthcare and Rehabilitation and the Turkish Embassy, organized a newborn health training program in Vientiane from February 10–11. The program, hosted at Mahosot Hospital, drew more than 50 doctors and nurses from 17 provinces and Vientiane Capital.

Officials said the training and equipment support are expected to improve the quality of neonatal care and contribute to reducing newborn mortality in Laos.
