Voters Seek Representatives Who Truly Serve the People Ahead of February Elections

ຂປລ Voters across Laos say they are determined to elect National Assembly members and Provincial People’s Councils’ members who genuinely represent the rights and interests of the people, as the country prepares for nationwide elections later this month.

Laos is set to hold elections for the 10th National Assembly and the 5th Provincial People’s Councils on February 22, 2026. Preparations are currently underway nationwide, with candidates actively campaigning and meeting voters in an organized manner in provinces and districts across the country.

Many citizens say they aim to choose representatives who are knowledgeable, capable, and confident in expressing their views, while also being committed to serving the public interest.

Mr. Khamsing Lattana, 73, a resident of Nongtha Nua village, told local media on February 13 that he felt excited to exercise his right to vote. He said he planned to support candidates who are educated, competent, outspoken, and able to bring the concerns of ordinary citizens to the National Assembly.

He expressed hope that newly elected representatives will help address pressing issues, including irregular water supply and the need to improve the stability of the electricity system, particularly during the rainy season when outages often occur. He also called for ensuring adequate electricity supply during the hot season when demand increases, and suggested improving the electricity pricing structure to make it more affordable.

In addition, Mr. Khamsing urged future lawmakers to continue pushing for better traffic management during rush hours to ease congestion, and to address cleanliness in the capital, especially the growing issue of waste.

To support a successful election, he said he has encouraged his children and grandchildren aged 18 and above to participate and vote for qualified representatives who meet required standards and conditions, so they can carry out their duties effectively in protecting public rights and interests.

Another voter from Nongtha Nua village, Mr. Boonkuea Chanthavisouk, said the upcoming election is a major political event for the nation and reflects the country’s democratic system. He added that, as a Lao citizen, he is proud to take part in choosing the new representatives.

Mr. Boonkuea also called on the next National Assembly and Provincial People’s Assembly members to urge the government and relevant sectors to address inflation, control the prices of goods and electricity, improve road conditions, and strengthen waste management services. He stressed that garbage collection companies and workers should take greater responsibility to ensure waste is properly collected and does not spill onto streets and alleyways.

The elections on February 22 are expected to be held simultaneously across the country, with voters encouraged to take part in shaping the nation’s next legislative bodies.
