(KPL) With air pollution forecast to intensify between March and April, Lao health and environmental authorities are warning the public of serious health risks linked to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), one of the most dangerous air pollutants. The Ministry of Health, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the World Health Organization (WHO), is calling on all sectors of society to work together to reduce pollution at its source and protect vulnerable groups.

Speaking at a media briefing on February 3, 2026, Ms. Teuanchit Arounlasy, Deputy Director of the Institute of Ecology and Biological Technology, said air pollution is the most significant environmental health risk globally, contributing to an estimated 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide. In the Lao PDR, major pollution sources include agricultural and household waste burning, forest fires, industrial activities, and vehicle emissions.

Health officials warned that children, the elderly, pregnant women, unborn babies, and people with chronic diseases face heightened risks. Short-term exposure can cause eye and respiratory irritation and breathing difficulties, while long-term exposure to PM2.5 increases the risk of stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic respiratory illnesses. Authorities are urging the public to monitor air quality levels, reduce exposure during high-pollution days, and follow official health guidance to safeguard public health.
