(KPL) Buddhist devotees from across the country gathered on February 2, 2026, corresponding to the 15th day of the waxing moon in the third lunar month, to take part in the annual Sikhottabong Stupa Festival, highlighted by a large-scale alms-giving ceremony and traditional religious rites.
The event included alms-giving to monks, water-pouring rituals in honor of King Sikhottabong, and merit-making activities, reflecting the strong faith and cultural traditions of the Lao people.
The ceremony was attended by senior religious and state leaders, led by Most Venerable Maha Khamman Panyavichit, Vice President of the Lao Buddhist Fellowship Organization (LBFO), and Venerable Vanphen Xayasone, President of the LBFO of Khammouane Province. Government leaders in attendance included Ms. Pany Yathotou, Vice President of the Lao PDR; Mr. Khambay Damlath, Vice President of the National Assembly; and Mr. Xaysana Khoutphouthone, Secretary of the Khammouane Provincial Party Committee. Former central and provincial leaders, members of the organizing committee, and a large number of Buddhist faithful also participated.

Prior to the religious ceremonies, the organizing committee presented commemorative gifts, including replicas of the Sikhottabong Stupa and medals of King Sikhottabong, to leaders, supporting organizations, and individuals who contributed to the successful organization of the festival.
Following the presentations, Mr. Xaysana Khoutphouthone lit ceremonial candles to pay respect to the Triple Gem. Devotees then took part in prayer sessions, received Buddhist precepts, and offered alms and donations to the Sangha. Contributions were also made to support infrastructure renovation within the Sikhottabong Stupa compound, aimed at preserving the historic and religious site for future generations.
In the afternoon, the festival continued with sports activities, including women’s and men’s volleyball finals and sepak takraw competitions in senior and open categories, adding to the lively atmosphere of the celebration.
The festival program continues on the evening of February 2, with a candlelight procession (Wien Thien) around the Sim and the Great Stupa at 8:00 p.m. The 2026 Sikhottabong Stupa Festival will conclude on the morning of February 3 with a final alms-giving ceremony and the offering of food and requisites to monks at the base of the Stupa.
