The opening ceremony was attended by Vice President Pany Yathotou, Mrs. Naly Sisoulith, spouse of President Thongloun Sisoulith, Vientiane Mayor Atsaphangthong Siphandone, Ministers, and other distinguished guests.

In her opening remarks, Ms. Souvita Paseuth, President of the Lao Handicraft Association and Head of the Festival’s Organizing Committee, highlighted that this year’s event is held under the slogan “Crafts Are the Heart of Tourism” and the theme “Weaving–Tying Love, Conserving the Tradition of Marriage.” The festival aims to celebrate National Handicraft Day on November 1 and contribute to activities commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Lao PDR.

“The event serves as a vibrant platform for artisans to showcase and sell their products, exchange knowledge, and promote Lao traditional crafts to a wider audience,” said Ms. Souvita.

Minister of Industry and Commerce Malaythong Kommasith noted that the handicraft sector plays a vital role in the country’s socio-economic development. “In recent years, the Ministry has implemented the Five-Year Industry and Commerce Development Plan (2021–2025), which recognizes handicrafts as an integral part of national growth,” he said.

He added that in 2020, Laos had 11,728 handicraft factories and workshops, 98.39% of which were family-run operations. Major exports included bamboo and rattan crafts, cotton products, and woven textiles, with total export value reaching USD 900,000.

Looking ahead, Minister Malaythong revealed that the Ministry is developing the 2026–2030 plans, which will continue to prioritize the handicraft sector. “Our goal is to create more income and employment opportunities in rural communities by nurturing skilled artisans, preserving traditional craftsmanship, and improving product quality and competitiveness for both domestic and international markets,” he explained.

This year’s festival features over 130 stalls exhibiting a wide range of products including textiles, jewelry, basketry, cultural items, and traditional foods. Visitors can enjoy live craft demonstrations, exhibitions, seminars, and cultural performances, such as Lao Phakhwan and Lamvong dance competitions.

A special highlight will be the walking procession celebrating National Handicraft Day on October 25, starting from Patuxay Monument and concluding at the festival venue. In addition, a fashion show featuring traditional wedding and ethnic costumes will take place on October 27 at the Landmark Hotel.

The Lao Handicraft Festival receives strong support from both the public and private sectors, as well as international partners. Jointly organized by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI), the event continues to serve as a cornerstone for preserving and promoting Lao cultural heritage while fostering sustainable development through creativity and craftsmanship.
