National Water Resources Committee Reviews 2026 Flood Preparedness Plan

ຂປລ The National Water Resources Committee (NWRC) has reviewed its flood preparedness strategy for the 2026 rainy season, with officials emphasizing stronger coordination, improved water management, and enhanced data sharing to reduce flood risks across the country.

The committee’s second meeting, held in Vientiane Capital on June 11 and chaired by Minister of Agriculture and Environment Linkham Douangsavanh, focused on approving the 2026 flood response plan and assessing readiness among relevant agencies for water and reservoir management during the rainy season.
Officials reported progress in implementing key measures, including the dissemination of regulations to hydropower operators, the standardization of flood management procedures, the appointment of local coordinators at hydropower dams, and the review of 90 hydropower projects nationwide.
Participants also examined weather and hydrological forecasts, flood modelling for the Mekong River and its tributaries, flood monitoring systems, reservoir operations, irrigation management, urban flood mitigation, and proposed improvements to water-related legislation.
Concluding the meeting, Minister Linkham called on all sectors to accelerate the development of flexible reservoir operating plans, strengthen information sharing through the national water database system, and enhance coordination with local authorities to improve preparedness and minimize the impact of flooding during the 2026 rainy season.
