A unique spectacle of dancing dragons, mythical phoenixes, and folkloric tales—all performed on water—is coming to Laos as part of the 2026 Vietnam Cultural Week. The world-renowned art of Vietnamese water puppetry will be presented free of charge to the Lao public on the evening of 13 May at the National Circus in Sawang Village.
For centuries, water puppetry has been a treasured tradition in Vietnam's Red River Delta, where farmers turned flooded rice paddies into stages. Puppeteers, standing waist-deep in water behind a bamboo screen, manipulate large wooden puppets through long submerged rods, creating the illusion that the characters are gliding magically across the water's surface. The result is a mesmerising blend of music, storytelling, and technical skill that has captivated audiences from Hanoi to Paris.
The event is being held to celebrate the enduring friendship and cultural exchange between Vietnam and the Lao PDR. While similar performances often carry high ticket prices in international venues, organisers have emphasised that this show will be completely free, welcoming families, students, and anyone curious to experience one of Southeast Asia's most distinctive art forms.
The performance will take place on 13 May 2026 at the National Gymnasium in Sawang, Chanthabuly district, Vientiane, beginning at 18:30 (6:30 PM). No tickets or reservations are required; residents are encouraged to arrive early to secure a good viewing spot.
