KPL Laos joined the global celebration of the 161st anniversary of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on May 17 under the theme “Digital Fibre for Life: Building Resilience in a Connected World,” selected by the International Telecommunication Union.

Minister of Technology and Communications Santisouk Simmalavong said the occasion commemorates the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the establishment of the ITU in 1865.

He noted that the ITU has played a major role in supporting Laos through telecommunications law development, radio-frequency planning, national internet strategies, human resource training, and technical assistance.

The minister highlighted Laos’ ongoing digital transformation efforts, including the celebration of National Post and Telecommunication Day on March 13, 2026, under the slogan: “Upgrading Postal and Telecommunication Infrastructure into Digital Infrastructure to Contribute to Socio-Economic Development.”

He said Laos will continue promoting modern and secure telecommunications, ICT, AI, and digital technologies to support socio-economic growth, digital government, and the development of a digital economy and society in line with Industry 4.0 goals.

The government also plans to continue implementing the National Digital Economy Development Plan and the National Telecommunications and Internet Development Strategy 2026–2040.

The minister called on state agencies, businesses, service providers, and the public to promote responsible use of digital technologies, strengthen awareness of online fraud, and support digital skills development to ensure inclusive and sustainable digital growth.
