More than 40% of the primary classes across the Lao PDR are multigrade, with students from two or more grade levels learning together in the same classroom. These classes are particularly common in rural and remote areas. Recent declines in teacher numbers are expected to make this type of classroom more prevalent.

The Ministry of Education and Sports of Lao PDR (MoES), with support from the Australian Government through the BEQUAL program, has launched new research into the factors that support children’s Lao language and literacy development, particularly for students who speak a language other than Lao at home. This research was conducted by the Lao Language Research Center of the Research Institute for Educational Sciences (RIES) in collaboration with the BEQUAL program.
