Champassak Launches Free Bus Service in Pakse to Combat Fuel Crisis

ຂປລ In a direct response to soaring fuel prices and supply shortages, the Champassak Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport officially launched a free public bus service within the Pakse municipal area on 17 March 2026. The inauguration ceremony, held at the Provincial Administration Office, was presided over by Mr Souksavanh Vilayvong, Chairman of the Champasak Provincial Administration Committee, and Mr Sitthiphone Bouttivong, Director of the Department of Public Works and Transport.

Mr Sitthiphone Bouttivong reported that the initial phase of the complimentary service focuses on primary roads within the city centre and critical links to suburb areas. The department has meticulously mapped these routes to ensure maximum accessibility for residents travelling between Pakse and its neighbouring districts.

Easing the Economic Burden

The initiative follows a directive from the Governor of Champassak and aligns with Prime Ministerial Order No. 40/PM, issued on 13 March 2026, which mandates state intervention to mitigate the impact of the ongoing fuel crisis.

The provincial government will fully subsidise the operating costs of the service. Speaking at the event, Mr Souksavanh Vilayvong emphasised that the primary objective is to alleviate the financial pressure on the public.

"This policy aims to provide essential transport relief for civil servants, students, and the general public during this period of high inflation and fuel scarcity," Mr Souksavanh stated. "By encouraging the use of public transport, we are collectively conserving energy and reducing reliance on private vehicles."

Looking Ahead

The provincial authorities confirmed that the free-fare policy will remain in effect until the fuel market stabilises and supplies return to normal levels.
