(KPL) The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has been awarded the Order of Freedom, Level I, marking 60 years of development from 1965 to 2025.

The award ceremony was held on December 29, 2025, in Vientiane, presided over by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone. Attendees included Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Linkham Douangsavanh, deputy ministers, former ministry leaders, and other officials.

In his remarks, Minister Linkham highlighted the historical role of agriculture and forestry as the foundation of the Lao people’s livelihoods. He said the sector has evolved from traditional subsistence practices into organized farming, livestock production, and trade.

He noted that in 1965, following the 13th Party Central Committee Congress, the sector was formally organized to support liberated zones. A five-level administrative system—central, provincial, district, sub-district, and village—was established to coordinate production and ensure food security for both civilians and revolutionary forces.

Since the establishment of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in 1975, the ministry has transitioned into a modern state institution contributing to national economic development.

The minister said the ministry continues to focus on four key priorities: ensuring food security, promoting commercial agricultural production, strengthening forestry management and environmental protection, and advancing rural development to reduce poverty.

The Order of Freedom, Level I, is the highest national honor, recognizing the collective contributions of the ministry’s officials and staff over six decades in supporting national development and public welfare.
