ຂປລ The Government of the Lao PDR has outlined a new strategic direction for 2026–2027, focusing on strengthening international cooperation with strategic and friendly countries to enhance the effectiveness of drug prevention and control efforts.

The plan seeks to intensify collaboration on prevention, deterrence, and suppression of drug trafficking, while promoting public awareness through education, training, and dissemination of laws and regulations. Special attention will be given to key target groups, including workers, students, youth, and ethnic communities in vulnerable and remote areas.

General Vilay Lakhamfong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security, presented a summary of the implementation of the National Agenda on Addressing Drug Problems (2021–2025) during the 10th Ordinary Session of the 9th Legislature of the National Assembly on 12 November 2025, chaired by Mr. Saysomphone Phomvihane, President of the National Assembly.

He emphasized that the Government continues to regard the fight against drugs as a national priority and an urgent task. By elevating the issue to a National Agenda, all sectors and levels of society have been mobilized to collectively address this critical challenge.

For the 2026–2027 period, the Government will focus on tightening inspections in drug transit zones and transport routes nationwide, enhancing the control of precursor chemicals imported into or transiting through Laos, and upgrading the capacity of law enforcement officials to identify and eradicate opium and cannabis cultivation sites. Efforts will also be made to strengthen local-level leadership and accountability among Party committees, state agencies, and local authorities, as well as to improve the legal framework through enforcement and updates to the Law on Narcotics and related decrees and prosecutorial guidelines.

In addition, authorities will intensify supervision and evaluation of the National Agenda’s implementation at both central and local levels to ensure measurable progress and sustainable results.
