(KPL) On December 5, 2024, UNESCO officially inscribed "Fon Lamvong Lao," a traditional Lao circle dance, into the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity during a ceremony in Paraguay.

The  recognition celebrates the deep cultural significance of "Fon Lamvong Lao," which has evolved from a simple village dance to a defining symbol of Lao heritage. Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, expressed profound joy on behalf of the Lao government and its multi-ethnic population, calling the designation a monumental achievement for the nation.

The term "Fon Lamvong Lao" derives from lam, meaning dance, and vong, meaning circle. This dance originated in rural Lao communities as a celebration of harvest time, performed around a central bale of rice. Over generations, it transformed into an elegant and stylized art form now integral to Lao culture.

The dance holds a pivotal role in weddings, national celebrations, and official government events. It involves two concentric circles: men form the inner circle, while women form the outer. The dancers move gracefully through eight repeated movements per cycle, synchronized with traditional Lao music. Before starting, it is customary for the man to invite a woman to dance, symbolizing respect—a gesture sometimes reversed during special ceremonies.

"Fon Lamvong Lao" symbolizes the soul of the Lao nation, bridging ancient traditions and popular culture. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, it fosters communal harmony as participants become part of the performance, embracing the joy of the dance.

The tradition remains vibrant through the efforts of performing arts groups, women’s associations, youth movements, and cultural centers, ensuring its transmission to future generations.

This historic UNESCO recognition not only honors Laos’s cultural richness but also positions "Fon Lamvong Lao" as a global cultural treasure, bringing pride and international recognition to the Lao people.
