(KPL) On September 25, the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the 24th ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF-24).

This MoU marks a significant milestone in advancing renewable energy (RE) initiatives across the ASEAN region, reflecting the growing momentum at the forum in promoting sustainable energy cooperation.

The MoU was signed by Beni Suryadi, Acting Executive Director of ACE, and Xie Qian, Marketing Director of Huawei APAC Digital Power, witnessed by Dr. Soukvisan Khinsamone, Deputy Director General of the Department of Planning and Cooperation at the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) of Lao PDR, Chen Yong, President of Huawei APAC Digital Power Smart PV & ESS Business, and Dr. Andy Tirta, Head of Corporate Affairs at ACE and Chairman of AEBF-24.

This strategic agreement reinforces the shared commitment of both organizations to advancing smart photovoltaic (PV) technology, with an emphasis on improving energy security, sustainability, and accessibility throughout the region.

Chen Yong, President of Huawei Asia Pacific Digital Power Smart PV & ESS Business, stated, "Through this collaboration, Huawei is honoured to play a pivotal role in driving the region’s energy transition by integrating advanced digital and power electronics technologies with renewable energy solutions. With a strong focus on sustainability, Huawei is committed to supporting ASEAN’s energy goals by providing cutting-edge technologies that enhance efficiency, reliability, and the development of green, smart infrastructure across the region."

The partnership will include a variety of initiatives, such as joint research, technical workshops, and capacity-building programmes aimed at accelerating the development of renewable energy solutions in ASEAN. This effort follows the success of the ASEAN Energy Data Centre, launched as part of ACE and Huawei’s ongoing commitment to energy efficiency and digital transformation in the region.

ACE and Huawei are also collaborating on a joint study to improve electrical safety standards for rooftop PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS) in ASEAN countries. During the event, a policy brief on the preliminary mapping of electrical safety standards and regulations was released.

As part of this initiative, a workshop on Smart PV Technology and Electrical Safety Standards for PV and BESS is scheduled for October 2024, with participation from government officials and public power utilities, followed by the publication of a White Paper in May 2025.

The cooperation outlined in the MoU will focus on collaborative research, capacity-building activities, and technical exchanges, with an emphasis on smart PV technologies to support ASEAN’s energy transition. This new phase in the ACE-Huawei partnership underscores both organizations' dedication to fostering innovation in energy systems and promoting green energy solutions in the region.
