Three people, including a mother and her two children, were killed after a landslide buried their home in Tha Bak village, Khamkeut District, Borikhamxay Province, following days of heavy rainfall, provincial authorities said.
According to the Borikhamxay Provincial Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, continuous rain saturated the soil, triggering landslides in steep mountainous areas and causing widespread disruption.
Along Route 8A, between the Phou Hai area in Khoun Kham District, Khammouane Province, and Nong Kok village in the Tha Bak area of Khamkeut District, landslides blocked the highway, temporarily cutting off traffic. Similar landslides also occurred along Route 1D near Nadi village, Viengthong District, disrupting transportation.
The committee reported on July 16 that flooding also affected roads and residential areas in Phon Tan village, Khamkeut District.
The deadliest incident occurred at around 2:00 a.m. on July 16, when a landslide struck a house in Tha Bak village while the family was asleep, killing a mother and her two children.
Provincial and district disaster management authorities, together with local officials in Khamkeut and Viengthong districts, have since cleared the affected sections of Routes 8A and 1D, restoring traffic. Emergency assistance has also been provided to affected residents, while support is being extended to the bereaved families.
Authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage and monitor weather conditions. Updated information on losses and recovery efforts will be released as additional assessments become available.
