ຂປລ Authorities in Savannakhet Province have detained 21 people as part of an intensified crackdown on illegal gold mining and logging across four districts, officials said.

The suspects include 11 Vietnamese nationals, seven Lao nationals and three Myanmar nationals. They were arrested during operations in Phin, Vilabouli, Sepon and Nong districts, where authorities have been targeting unauthorized extraction of minerals and timber.
The campaign follows a May 7 directive from the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee calling for stronger oversight of mineral resources and stricter enforcement against illegal activities. In response, the Savannakhet Provincial Administration Council established Committee 956/PAC to lead inspections and coordinate enforcement efforts.
Working with provincial police, military personnel and local authorities, the committee deployed about 180 officers organized into six task forces.

According to the committee, authorities investigated 24 illegal mining and logging sites, including seven newly identified locations. Twelve sites were found in Sepon District, seven in Phin District and four in Vilabouli District, including one linked to illegal logging. Officials also coordinated operations in Nong District to dismantle another target.
During the raids, authorities seized vehicles, machinery and other equipment allegedly used in the illegal operations.
All 21 suspects are being held at the provincial rehabilitation and detention center while investigations continue.
Officials said they are working with local communities and village authorities to identify additional people connected to the illegal activities and will pursue legal action against those responsible. The removal and secure storage of seized equipment is also underway as the enforcement campaign continues.
