A groundbreaking ceremony for the Wattay International Airport Improvement Project was held on May 22, 2026, in Vientiane under the co-chairmanship of Mr. Leklay Sivilay, Minister of Public Work and Transport, Mr. Koizumi Tsutomu, Japanese Ambassador to Laos.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from both Lao and Japanese agencies, including Japan International Cooperation Agency Chief Representative Mr. Kobayashi Miyako, the Director General of the Department of Civil Aviation, the Director of Lao Airports, the Director of Lao Air Traffic Management, and officials from relevant sectors.
Speaking at the event, officials highlighted the strategic importance of Wattay International Airport as the principal international gateway of the Lao PDR and a key hub supporting economic growth, trade, tourism, and regional connectivity. Since commencing operations in 1960, the airport has played a vital role in facilitating domestic and international air transportation.

The improvement project is aimed at expanding airport capacity to accommodate growing passenger traffic, enhancing operational efficiency, and upgrading aviation safety systems in accordance with international standards. The project will also introduce modern technology and engineering solutions to strengthen infrastructure and improve passenger services and travel experience.
Implemented as part of the longstanding development cooperation between Laos and Japan, the project is supported through Japanese grant aid and Official Development Assistance (ODA) loans under a master plan prepared by Japan International Cooperation Agency. The initiative reflects the close bilateral partnership between the two countries, which has continued for more than six decades.
The scope of the project includes runway and taxiway improvements, apron expansion, passenger terminal modernization, installation of aviation safety equipment, upgrading of air traffic control systems, as well as capacity building and human resource development in the aviation sector to ensure compliance with internationally recognized standards.
