The ceremony was attended by Mr Chaleun Yiapahoeu, President of the Laos-Cuba Friendship Association and the Parliamentary Friendship Group; Sommad Pholsena, President of the Lao Committee for Peace and Solidarity; Sakhone Phommalath, Vice Head of the Propaganda and Training Committee of the Central Committee of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party; and Xaythida Phomvihane, Vice President of the Lao Front for National Development, along with other guests and supporters of Laos-Cuba relations.

In her remarks, Ambassador Enna Viant described Martí and Fidel as the ethical, spiritual and political foundations of the Cuban nation and symbols guiding the Cuban Revolution.

She said Martí’s ideas on sovereignty, justice and national independence inspired generations of Cubans and laid the moral foundation for the revolution that came to power in 1959 under Fidel Castro’s leadership.

The ambassador highlighted Cuba’s achievements in free education, healthcare, science, culture and sports under Fidel Castro, saying they reflected Martí’s vision of freedom and social justice.

She also reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to defending its sovereignty amid continued economic sanctions and political pressure from the United States, while praising the resilience of the Cuban people and youth.

Ambassador Enna Viant expressed appreciation to Lao organizations and friends of Cuba for supporting the memorial project and strengthening solidarity between the two countries.

The ceremony also recognized the contribution of Andrés González González, a Cuban sculptor who donated the memorial artwork, and Mr. Hongkad Souvannavong, who designed and oversaw the project.

The memorial was inaugurated at the Embassy of Cuba in the Lao PDR as a symbol of friendship and solidarity between Laos and Cuba.
