(KPL) On April 16, 2026 — Lao people across the country marked the final day of Lao New Year celebrations with vibrant and meaningful activities, as the occasion of Sangkhan Khuen signaled the beginning of the new year, B.E. 2569.

Sangkhan Khuen, or the rising of Sangkhan, is regarded by Lao Buddhists as an auspicious day, symbolizing renewal and a fresh start. It is considered an ideal time for conducting merit-making and traditional ceremonies. In Vientiane Capital and provinces nationwide, people continued to celebrate in a lively and joyful atmosphere, reflecting customs that have been preserved for generations.

In the capital, a range of cultural and religious activities took place. Early in the morning, residents gathered at Wat Ong Teu Mahavihan to offer alms and sanghadana to monks. This was followed by the traditional ritual of pouring water over Buddha statues, symbolizing respect for Buddhism, the cleansing of past misfortunes, and the welcoming of blessings, peace, and happiness for the year ahead.

These practices not only uphold long-standing traditions but also strengthen public awareness of religious values and highlight the unity of the Lao people in preserving their cultural heritage.

Another key activity observed on the final day was the building of sand stupas, or that sai, at temples across the country. This tradition, passed down through generations, involves shaping sand into stupa-like forms and decorating them with small flags, zodiac symbols, flowers, incense, and candles.

The ritual is believed to bring good fortune, happiness, and prosperity to individuals and families, while also contributing to the development of temples and local communities.

The final day of celebrations reflects the enduring importance of Lao New Year traditions in fostering social harmony, spiritual well-being, and cultural identity across the nation.
