(KPL) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in its capacity as Chair of the National Regulatory Authority for the UXO/Mine Action Sector, announced that Lao PDR will chair the 3rd Review Conference of the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) in 2026.
The announcement ceremony was held on Feb. 27, 2026, in Vientiane and presided over by Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the NRA. The event brought together government leaders, diplomats, international organizations, development partners, UXO operators, victims of unexploded ordnance, and students.
The chairmanship aims to raise public awareness of the convention, highlight Lao PDR’s global role in addressing cluster munitions, reaffirm national commitments under the treaty, and mobilize international cooperation ahead of the conference.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Thongsavanh Phomvihane said hosting the review conference reflects the Lao government’s continued contribution to international peace efforts while addressing the country’s UXO legacy through global partnership and humanitarian action.
The 3rd Review Conference is scheduled to take place in Vientiane from Sept. 13–18, 2026. Delegates will conduct a field visit to UXO clearance sites in Luang Prabang Province on the opening day.
The conference will focus on strengthening international cooperation, integrating UXO clearance with socio-economic development, promoting universal participation in the treaty, and expanding assistance for clearance, risk education, and victim support.
Lao PDR became a State Party to the Convention on Cluster Munitions in 2008, and the treaty entered into force on Aug. 1, 2010.
