(KPL) The Lao People’s Democratic Republic will celebrate the 45th Anniversary of World Food Day 2025 and commemorate both the International Day and National Week for the Eradication of Poverty from November 7–8 in Vientiane Capital.

This year’s celebrations will be held under the themes “Cooperate for Food and a Better Future” and “Stop Malpractice in Society and Institutions by Ensuring Respect and Effective Family Support.”

Mr. Linkham Douangsavanh, Minister of Agriculture and Environment, announced the event during a press briefing at the Ministry on October 31. He emphasized that hunger remains a major global challenge and noted the historical significance of the observances:

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations established World Food Day on October 16 each year, beginning in 1980.

The United Nations designated October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty in 1992.

The Government of the Lao PDR declared October 17–24 as the National Week for the Eradication of Poverty starting in 2003.

He added that 2025 also marks the 80th Anniversary of FAO’s founding, recognizing its critical role in promoting global food security.

Minister Linkham underscored that the commemoration of these days is not only to raise awareness of hunger and poverty but also to inspire determination and capability among people to overcome these challenges. The event calls on all sectors to engage in producing diverse, efficient, and sustainable food systems.

On behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the official host of this year’s event, and the Organizing Committee, the Minister called on the Party, State, Lao citizens, and development partners to join hands in celebrating the occasion and advancing shared goals for food security and poverty eradication.
