ຂປລ The Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) is marking a historic milestone as it celebrates 80 years of foreign affairs and diplomacy, underscoring decades of growth, strategic engagement, and international recognition under the leadership of the Party.

Since its beginnings following the declaration of independence, Laos has made remarkable progress in establishing and expanding diplomatic relations. These efforts have fostered strong and friendly partnerships across the globe, advancing national development goals while raising the country’s profile on regional and international stages.

In an interview with state media on September 30, 2025, on the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of Lao Diplomacy Day, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith reflected on the nation’s diplomatic journey.

“Lao foreign relations began with our declaration of independence, initially focusing on political diplomacy to form strategic alliances with like-minded countries. At the same time, people-to-people diplomacy within the country promoted national unity and patriotism,” he explained.

Over the decades, Laos has adapted its foreign policy to align with changing global dynamics. The implementation of the Party’s reform agenda transformed Lao diplomacy into a multidimensional approach—blending political engagement with economic cooperation to serve the nation’s socio-economic development in the context of globalization, digitalization, and regional integration.

Guided by the principles of “Peace, Independence, Friendship, and Cooperation” and the strategic approach of “More Friends, Fewer Enemies,” Lao diplomacy has strengthened the country’s role on the international stage. These principles have enabled Laos to foster peaceful relations, enhance regional stability, and attract international support and cooperation.

Diplomatic achievements have also contributed to major economic milestones. The inauguration of the Lao-China Railway in 2021 has become a vital regional trade and transport link, while the opening of the Lao Bao-Vietnam International Port has further boosted cross-border connectivity and trade.

Laos has also benefited from expanded cooperation in priority development sectors, including human resource development, education, public health, infrastructure, finance, law, and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance—all of which contribute to sustainable development and national resilience.

Today, Lao PDR maintains diplomatic relations with 151 countries, a substantial increase since the adoption of the New Economic Mechanism in 1986. These ties have evolved from symbolic recognition into substantive, strategic partnerships, reflecting Laos’ growing role in global affairs.

Currently, Laos maintains 12 key strategic partnerships, categorized as follows:

Comprehensive Strategic Partners: Vietnam, China, Japan, and Cambodia

Strategic Partners: Republic of Korea, Cuba, Russia, Hungary, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (with Russia and the DPRK in discussions to upgrade to comprehensive strategic partners)

Comprehensive Cooperation Partners: Thailand and Australia

Integrated Cooperation Partner: United States

Looking ahead, Laos’ diplomatic strategy will continue to prioritize peace, international cooperation, and sustainable development, ensuring that the country remains a proactive and respected member of the international community.
