A remarkable archaeological discovery has been made at Wat Meuang Kang in Champasak District, Champasak Province, where 70 ancient Buddha statues were unearthed during a renovation project on July 14, 2025.
(KPL) A remarkable archaeological discovery has been made at Wat Meuang Kang in Champasak District, Champasak Province, where 70 ancient Buddha statues were unearthed during a renovation project on July 14, 2025.
The statues were discovered sealed in a single urn, buried approximately 45 centimeters below ground, as workers were preparing the foundation for repairs to the western side of the library hall (Ho Tai).
On July 15, Mr. Khamchan Xaimoungkhoun, Head of the World Heritage Department of Wat Phou Champasak, confirmed the find. Heritage experts immediately conducted a site survey, carefully retrieved the relics, and carried out cleaning, preservation, and official registration procedures.
The collection includes: 69 Buddha statues crafted from silver and floral resin
1 statue made from floral resin and ancient Lao gold
The sacred figures are finely detailed, depicting both Samadhi (meditation) and Maravijaya (victory over Mara) postures. Their sizes range from 3 to 5 centimeters in width and 10 to 18 centimeters in height.
Preliminary assessments by experts suggest the artifacts date back to the 17th–18th century, offering a rare glimpse into Laos’ spiritual and artistic heritage from that era.
According to Mr. Khamchan, the Wat Phou Heritage Department will coordinate with the Champasak District authorities, relevant state agencies, the abbot of Wat Meuang Kang, and local community elders to determine a suitable location to permanently display the statues.
The aim is to create a dedicated space for worship and public appreciation, allowing local residents, pilgrims, and international visitors to pay homage to these sacred historical treasures.
