(KPL/Prensa Latina)  Japanese specialists in renewable energies are reportedly working on a technical advisory project to introduce renewable energies in Cuba, a task led by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Akiyama Yasuharu, president of West Japan Engineering Consultants, Inc. (WJEC); Yasuhiro Kubo, president of Tokyo Electric Power Co., Ltd. (TEPSCO), and Tsutomu Takahashi, president and Chief Executive Officer of Yachiyo Engineering Co., Ltd. (YEC), attended the meeting with specialists from the Cuban state-run energy company Union Electrica (UNE).

A JICA press release states that the two-year technical collaboration project is expected to improve the management and control of the electricity distribution and generation system with the introduction of renewable energy.

The project’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. IWATA Tsunehisa, Japanese experts, and JICA representatives held the first meeting with UNE members in Havana to launch the project.

According to the research conducted by the Master Plan Study Project in the Energy Sector for the Development of Renewable Energy in Cuba, completed in 2023, the country’s electricity generation in 2022 was 83.5 percent from oil, 12.5 percent from natural gas, 1.8 from biomass, 1.3 from solar energy, 0.8 from hydroelectric energy, and 0.3 percent from wind energy.

Cuba has a policy of introducing more renewable energy in a context in which tackling climate change is inextricably linked to the pursuit of sustainable development, and the 2014 target of 24 percent of electricity generation to come from renewable energy sources by 2030.

The note states that due to the deterioration of the country’s electricity generation infrastructure, which has led to frequent power outages, Renewable Energy Sources are being introduced on a massive scale.
