(KPL) The Lao Ministry of Health and Hong Kong-based GX Foundation marked the successful completion of their six-year (2019-2025) cataract elimination project at a ceremony in Vientiane this week. The initiative restored vision for 5,768 Lao patients, offering life-changing treatment to those suffering from preventable blindness.

The event was attended by

Mr. Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune, Lao Deputy Prime Minister , Mr. Leung Chun-ying, Vice Chairman of China’s National Committee of the CPPCC and GX Foundation Chairman, Dr. Bounfeng Phoummalaysith, Lao Minister of Health, Ms. Fan Hong, Chinese Ambassador to Laos

Deputy PM Kikeo praised the GX Foundation’s "invaluable support", emphasizing how the project delivered free surgeries to thousands, aligning with Laos’ public health goals. The partnership, formalized in a 2019 MoU, has strengthened ties between Laos and China’s Hong Kong SAR.

The project underscores deepening Laos-China relations, reflecting Beijing’s "Four Goods" policy (good neighbors, friends, partners, and comrades).

With cataracts remaining a leading cause of blindness in Laos, officials hinted at future collaborations to expand eye-care access. The success sets a precedent for Southeast Asia-China health initiatives.
