(KPL) On September 26, 2024, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone led a delegation to the General Debate of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Sonexay met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He expressed gratitude for the cooperative relations between Laos and the UN, particularly regarding the organization's assistance in addressing unexploded ordnance (UXO) issues in Laos, a partnership that has been ongoing since 2003.

The two leaders discussed Laos' upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship in 2024, the situation in Myanmar, and the natural disasters currently affecting the Lao PDR. Secretary-General Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Laos, especially in UXO clearance, and commended Laos for its chairmanship of ASEAN and its development efforts aimed at graduating from the least developed country status.

Guterres emphasized that the UN would increase its assistance to developing countries, including landlocked nations, to help them achieve sustainable development goals, while expanding collaboration with Laos and other regional partners.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Sonexay held bilateral talks with Nepalese Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli, where he commended the longstanding friendship between the two countries, which dates back to the establishment of diplomatic relations on May 20, 1970. The two leaders highlighted the continuous growth of bilateral relations and mutual support in international arenas.

They also discussed enhancing future cooperation, particularly in investment, trade, tourism promotion, and other potential areas. Prime Minister Sonexay proposed that the two countries exchange lessons and information in preparation for graduating from least developed country status by 2026.

Additionally, Prime Minister Sonexay met with Gianni Infantino, President of the International Football Federation (FIFA), to discuss collaboration between the Lao government, represented by the Lao National Football Federation, and FIFA, as well as partnerships under regional cooperation frameworks, including ASEAN.

Infantino emphasized FIFA’s ongoing commitment to comprehensive collaboration with the Lao PDR, particularly in supporting and developing essential infrastructure throughout the country. He noted that efforts would also be made to promote football in schools to encourage law obedience among students.
