(KPL) At the Summit of the Future in New York on September 23, Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith called for urgent action to bridge the global digital divide, stressing its importance for achieving the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

Speaking during an interactive dialogue on "Towards a Common Digital Future," Saleumxay who is also Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted how digital innovation is a key driver of progress. "The advancement of digital innovation serves as a pivotal accelerator for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda," he said.

Despite the widespread adoption of digital technology in areas like trade, finance, and education, many countries, especially those in special situations, still struggle with limited infrastructure, low digital literacy, and affordability issues, hindering their access to opportunities.

“This digital divide can deepen existing inequalities,” Saleumxay warned, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to ensure “no one is left behind” in the global push for sustainable development through digital innovation.

Laos, he noted, views science, technology, and innovation as essential tools for addressing challenges and advancing towards a green economy and digital transformation. The country seeks to strengthen cooperation with international organizations and regional partners, such as ASEAN, to promote technology transfer and share best practices.

However, Saleumxay underscored that international support remains crucial, particularly in developing digital infrastructure and enhancing human resource capacity. He called for increased North-South, South-South, and triangular cooperation to share expertise and technical know-how, tailored to the specific needs of each country.

By investing in education, research, and teacher training, Saleumxay believes countries can build the skilled workforce needed to close the digital gap and advance sustainable development.

The Deputy PM welcomed the Global Digital Compact adopted by the summit, which outlines a framework for digital governance and AI regulation. Key commitments include connecting schools and hospitals to the internet, safeguarding online human rights, and establishing global standards for AI governance.
