Huaphan: Flood Hits 3 Districts, Causing Damage of Over 37 Billion Kip

(KPL) On July 31, 2024, Phonsouk Inthavong, Deputy Governor of Huaphan Province and Chairman of the Provincial Disaster Management Committee, along with the committee, inspected the damage caused by the floods in Huameuang, Hiem, and Xon Districts.

The initial assessment of the damage caused by the recent flooding, which occurred between July 24-25, 2024, indicates severe damage to production areas, livestock, roads, bridges, power lines, telecommunication systems, water supply systems, and residential properties, among others.

Preliminary data shows that the total damage in the three districts exceeds 37 billion Kip. In Huameuang District, landslides destroyed one house, affected over 177 hectares of rice fields, over 36 hectares of upland rice, 55 fish ponds, more than 1,400 kilograms of fish, over 1,000 meters of irrigation canals, and made 11.5 kilometers of rural roads impassable, with four electricity poles broken. The disaster caused total damage of over 2 billion Kip in the district.

In Hiem District, the damage included over 129 hectares of rice fields, over 12 hectares of upland rice, more than 100 hectares of rice paddies, 215 poultry, 14 large livestock including cows, buffaloes, goats, and pigs, 38 fish ponds, irrigation canals, irrigation pipes, 48 fallen power poles, electric lines, and 43 broken telephone poles. Routes 1C and 3209 experienced landslides. The damage caused by the disaster was estimated at over 16 billion Kip.

In Xon District, 19 villages were affected, 24 houses were damaged with 4 completely destroyed, and various assets were lost. Water overflowed and buried agricultural lands, over 180 hectares of rice fields, more than 30 fish ponds, over 100 poultry, and irrigation systems, 13 wooden weirs, and irrigation canals. Additionally, 35 electricity poles were broken or fallen, small electric generators and workers' housing were flooded, landslides caused widespread power outages, many points of road damage, 2 broken bridges, and water supply within the city was rendered unusable. The total damage in the district was estimated at over 18 billion Kip.
