The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment held the Asia GEF-9 Planning Workshop in Vientiane on September 29, 2026, to discuss priorities and planning for the ninth replenishment cycle of the Global Environment Facility (GEF-9).
(KPL) The workshop was chaired by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Xaynakhone Inthavong and attended by officials responsible for project development, operations and policy, as well as representatives of international organisations, development partners and civil society.
Mr. Xaynakhone highlighted the importance of GEF-9 for supporting environmental and climate action in Asia. Donor countries have pledged US$3.9 billion to the GEF-9 cycle, reflecting continued international support for multilateral environmental cooperation.
The workshop discussed Lao PDR’s priorities under GEF-9 and ways to align them with national development and environmental strategies, including the 10th National Socio-Economic Development Plan, National Adaptation Plan and National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.
Key areas include sustainable forestry, climate-resilient agriculture, water, energy and food security in the Mekong Basin, and environmentally sound management of hazardous waste.
Participants also exchanged views on policy priorities, programmes, blended financing and country-group planning, with the aim of sharing experience, strengthening capacity and supporting effective implementation of GEF-9 projects.
