The Government of Japan has increased its grant aid for the expansion and improvement of Wattay International Airport by ¥1.027 billion, bringing its total grant commitment for the project to ¥3.863 billion (approximately US$26.5 million).
The additional funding was formalized on August 20 with the signing of an amended grant aid agreement at the Ministry of Finance in Vientiane. Mr. Vongkhamheng Vongthachak, Director General of the Department of International Cooperation and Finance, signed on behalf of the Lao government, while Ms. Miyako Kobayashi, Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Laos Office, signed for Japan.
The project aims to modernize Laos’ primary international gateway and bolster regional connectivity, aligning with the country’s infrastructure priorities under the 10th Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan (2026–2030).
Initially launched in 2024 with a grant of ¥2.836 billion, the project received this top-up to offset rising construction and procurement costs. The additional allocation will ensure the upgrade proceeds on schedule and meets all original design standards.
