Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating narcotic drugs and strengthening nationwide efforts to address drug-related challenges in a message marking the 39th International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26.
In his message, the Prime Minister said the annual observance reflects the international community’s shared determination to enhance cooperation in preventing, controlling and suppressing illicit drug production, trafficking and abuse. He also described the occasion as an opportunity to review the implementation and achievements of Laos’ National Agenda on Drug Problem Solving (2021–2025).Mr. Sonexay noted that the government has continued to prioritize comprehensive measures to address the drug problem, including public awareness campaigns, strengthened law enforcement, alternative livelihood programmes, rehabilitation and treatment services, and greater participation from communities and civil society.He highlighted ongoing efforts to reinforce legal frameworks, dismantle drug trafficking networks, seize illicit narcotics and related assets, and prosecute offenders in accordance with the law.The Prime Minister called on government agencies, security forces, educational institutions, families, communities and all sectors of society to work together in preventing drug abuse and reducing the impact of illicit narcotics.He stressed that sustained cooperation and shared responsibility are essential to protecting public health, maintaining social stability and advancing the government’s long-term goal of building a safer and drug-free Lao society.
