The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in cooperation with the Vientiane Capital Administration, organized a tree-planting ceremony on May 31, 2026, at Chao Anouvong Park in Vientiane Capital to mark the 46th anniversary of National Tree Planting Day and International Children’s Day.
The event was held under the theme: “United in spirit to plant at least one tree per person each year; plant trees today for the benefit of future generations; and join together in planting trees for forests, economic development, environmental protection, and climate change mitigation.”The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister , senior Party and State leaders, ministers and deputy ministers, representatives of ministries and equivalent organizations, members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, students, children, adolescents, youth, and members of the public.On the occasion, Minister of Agriculture and Environment highlighted the history and significance of National Tree Planting Day and reviewed the achievements of nationwide tree-planting efforts. He noted that the Party and Government designated June 1 as National Tree Planting Day in 1980, coinciding with International Children’s Day. The initiative aims to raise awareness among children, young people, and the wider public about the importance of forests while encouraging broad participation in forest management, conservation, and development to support green and sustainable socio-economic growth.To promote National Tree Planting Day nationwide, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has launched a countrywide tree-planting campaign in conjunction with International Children’s Day and National Environment Day. The campaign encourages provinces and local authorities to organize activities based on their respective conditions and development potential.As part of this year’s programme, the ministry, in collaboration with local administrations, plans to collect more than 121,000 kilograms of tree seeds, produce over 25.1 million seedlings, and plant trees across more than 50,000 hectares nationwide. Provincial authorities and Vientiane Capital will also organize tree seedling exhibitions to promote tree cultivation for both commercial purposes and environmental conservation.For the 2026 National Tree Planting Day campaign, tree-planting activities are planned across more than 7,300 hectares nationwide, with over 4.5 million seedlings to be planted.In Vientiane Capital alone, approximately 50 hectares have been designated for planting, including areas affected by forest fires. Species selected for planting include Burmese ebony, rosewood, ironwood, beechwood, local hardwood varieties and teak, with a total of more than 80,000 seedlings scheduled for cultivation.The event reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to expanding forest cover, enhancing environmental protection, promoting climate resilience, and encouraging greater public participation in sustainable natural resource management for the benefit of future generations.
