ຂປລ The government opened its regular monthly meeting for May 2026 on Wednesday at the Prime Minister’s Office under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.

The meeting brought together deputy prime ministers, cabinet members, and representatives from ministries and state organizations in person, while governors and deputy governors from Vientiane and provinces joined via teleconference to review key developments in May and discuss priority work plans for June.
Officials said the meeting comes as the Party, State, and Lao people continue implementing the resolutions of the 12th Party Congress and the 10th National Socio-Economic Development Plan for 2026-2030. Authorities are also accelerating preparations to elevate rural development and poverty reduction as national priorities.
Participants noted that regional and global conditions remain tense and unpredictable, particularly ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and other regions, which continue to place pressure on the global economy. Officials warned that the situation could further affect commodity prices, transportation, and broader economic conditions in Laos, requiring timely and effective measures to reduce impacts on livelihoods and national socio-economic development.
During the session, participants are expected to discuss several major issues, including implementation of priority government tasks for May and action plans for June, along with follow-up measures related to the outcomes of the 3rd Plenary Session of the 12th Party Central Committee.
The meeting will also review regional and international developments, national defense and public security work, and ongoing unexploded ordnance clearance efforts.
Other agenda items include a proposal to reform the general education structure from the current 5+4+3 system to a 6+3+3 model, preparations for Laos to host the 22nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation and related meetings in June, and a report on the recent fish die-off in the Sedone River in Champasak Province.
Cabinet members are also scheduled to examine a report on civil service recruitment in 2025 and staffing quotas for 2026, as well as several draft legal documents, including the Draft Law on the State Treasury, the amended Draft Law on the State Budget, and a Draft Decree on the Lease and Concession of State Land.
In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Sonexay called on participants to provide practical, direct, and solution-oriented feedback to ensure that decisions from the meeting can be implemented effectively and deliver concrete results.
