KPL Luang Prabang province plans to plant 1 million tree seedlings across more than 300 hectares as part of a major forest restoration campaign tied to National Tree Planting Day on June 1 and upcoming environmental celebrations.

Provincial authorities said preparations are underway in all districts following surveys of potential planting areas coordinated by the Provincial Agriculture and Environment Department.

Mr. Somvayphet Douangprasith, head of the department, said the province’s main tree planting ceremony will take place in the watershed protection forest area of Don Kang Village in Luang Prabang. Species to be planted include tamarind, cherry and ironwood trees aimed at protecting water sources.

The main ceremony is scheduled for June 1, 2026, while districts with suitable conditions may organize activities before or after the official date to help meet the province’s target of restoring more than 300 hectares of forest land.

Companies, development projects and local communities across the province are also expected to hold separate tree planting activities throughout the rainy season.

This year, Luang Prabang has also been selected to host Laos’ main national celebration for World Environment Day and National Environment Day on June 5.

Activities will include a tree planting ceremony near the Laos-China Railway station, as well as exhibitions featuring photographs and products made from recycled waste materials. Local authorities and related sectors have been tasked with organizing the events.

Provincial officials have additionally instructed sectors and communities to protect and maintain previously planted trees, replace damaged seedlings and support long-term forest restoration efforts.

Authorities called on government agencies, businesses, private organizations and multi-ethnic communities to participate in the campaign to help meet national forest cover targets.
