(KPL) A feasibility study has officially begun for a proposed expressway linking Vientiane to Huaphan Province, a major infrastructure project aimed at boosting trade and tourism across northern Laos.
The project follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Lao government and Phongsavanh Group to conduct surveys and design work for the expressway, which is expected to span between 450 and 485 kilometers.
The planned route will connect Vientiane with Xaysomboun Province, Xieng Khouang Province, and Huaphan, extending to the Nam Soy International Border Checkpoint in Viengxay District along the Laos–Vietnam border.
The project is being developed as a joint venture between Phongsavanh Group and major industrial partners from China.
Officials said the study is focusing on two main route options. The first would link Vientiane to Paksan in Bolikhamxay Province before continuing to Vietnam via the Thanh Thuy border, covering about 725 kilometers in total. The second route would pass through Xaysomboun and Xieng Khouang before reaching Huaphan and connecting onward to Hanoi, with a total length of around 730 kilometers.
The expressway is expected to improve regional connectivity, reduce travel time, and enhance economic exchange between Laos, Vietnam, and China.
Officials said the project supports Laos’ long-term goal of transforming from a landlocked country into a land-linked hub in the region.
