(KPL) Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane recently received a courtesy call from Kent Vachon, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada to the Lao PDR.
During the meeting, Minister Thongsavanh warmly welcomed Ambassador Vachon and congratulated him on his appointment in October 2025. He expressed confidence that the Ambassador would continue to strengthen the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries for the mutual benefit of their peoples.
The Minister also conveyed appreciation for Canada’s continued support to the Lao PDR over the past five decades since the establishment of diplomatic relations on June 15, 1974. Both sides discussed priority areas of cooperation, including unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance, human resource development through the SEED project, and collaboration under the ASEAN–Canada Dialogue framework. Laos is currently serving as Country Coordinator for ASEAN–Canada Dialogue Relations for the 2024–2027 period.
Minister Thongsavanh further congratulated Canada on the first anniversary of the official opening of its Embassy in Vientiane in March 2025.
Ambassador Vachon expressed his sincere thanks for the warm reception and reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with the Lao side to further enhance bilateral relations and cooperation, bringing practical benefits to the peoples of both nations.
