Luang Prabang Eyes UNESCO Creative Town Status to Boost Cultural Tourism

12/02/2026 15:03
ຂປລ Luang Prabang is stepping up its bid to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, positioning the World Heritage town as a regional hub of culture, creativity and sustainable tourism.

A high-level consultation on Feb 11, 2026 brought together provincial authorities, cultural experts and UNESCO partners to advance a strategy that links heritage preservation with creative industry growth.

Officials highlighted Luang Prabang’s strengths in architecture, gastronomy, traditional crafts and performing arts, noting that these assets form a strong foundation for expanding cultural tourism and community-based economic opportunities.

Authorities said the initiative will enhance the town’s global visibility, attract quality tourism and support sustainable urban development while safeguarding its unique heritage landscape.

The consultation outcomes will support the preparation of a formal proposal to UNESCO, with the long-term goal of establishing Luang Prabang as a leading creative destination in the region.
