Cuba Bets on new technologies in the Sugar Industry

(KPL/Prensa Latina)  The National Innovation Council analyzed the use of new technologies to increase sugar and sugarcane production at its most recent session, on the presence of President Miguel Diaz-Canel. 

This proposal, presented by the Azcuba Sugar Group, seeks to increase export revenues, which would enable the growth of the sector and contribute to the Caribbean country’s economy.

In this regard, the president considered the project’s implementation plan to reverse the current situation of the industry as strategic and proposed incorporating “all ideas that can strengthen it and make it viable in the shortest possible time.”

Azcuba Vice President Mariela Gallardo extolled the significance of a strategic plan in this area based on the implementation of technological, financial, and organizational innovations, mainly, after the sector’s downward trend in production levels and its progressive.

In this regard, she emphasized on the importance of finding avenues for economic and financial support that will enable the sector’s sustainability and growth.

The Presidency of the Republic pointed out that Gallardo stressed on the need of resizing the sugar industry, which is present in 50 municipalities across the country.

The executive also deepened on the challenges and strengths of the presented strategy, as well as the possibility of the sugar industry of regaining its role as a contributor of foreign currency to the national economy.

For his part, PhD. Jorge Nuñez noted that the transformation of the communities where the sugar industry operates must be taken into account.
