(KPL)  The Lao government, in partnership with the Republic of Korea, has recently launched a project aimed at developing a comprehensive management and monitoring system to ensure the stability of agricultural water reservoirs across the country.

A launch ceremony was recently held, attended by Ms. Chanthakhone Bualaphan, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, and Mr. Jung Yung Soo, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Laos, alongside representatives from key sectors and government agencies.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Satthathep Thammachak, Deputy Director General of the Department of Irrigation, announced that the project will be implemented over a four-year period (2024–2028). Funded by South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, the initiative is backed by 5.5 billion Korean Won (approximately USD 4.6 million) under the Official Development Assistance (ODA) program.

The primary goal of the project is to enhance the safety and security of communities downstream from irrigation dams by strengthening dam infrastructure and management. It also aims to promote efficient water use, boost agricultural productivity, and improve rural incomes.

Project highlights development of a national master plan for dam safety management, establishment of a dam safety control center in Laos, pilot dam safety assessments at four selected sites, including the installation of early warning systems, provision of technical equipment, training, and support, including capacity-building programs for Lao engineers and officials, some of which will be conducted in the Republic of Korea and strengthening of Laos’s technical capabilities in long-term dam safety and water resource management.

Mr. Moon Kyung Duck, head of the Korean delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, emphasized that the project aligns with South Korea’s commitment to supporting sustainable rural development and disaster resilience. "We hope this project will serve as a cornerstone for the Lao government to implement systematic and sustainable dam safety management," he said.

In her remarks, Deputy Minister Chanthakhone Bualaphan expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Korean government, its people, and the Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC) for their continued technical and financial support. She underscored the importance of close cooperation to ensure the project's success and its long-term benefits to Lao communities.
