(KPL) The National Road Safety Committee (NRSC) is set to host the 2025 National Road Safety Week under the theme "Street for Life #Drive Slower, Live Longer" on April 5, 2025, in Savannakhet Province. The event will feature a variety of activities, including a parade, debates, a theater performance, and a booth showcasing road safety products and equipment.

Mr. Bounta On-navong, Director of the Transport Department at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and Head of the Secretariat of the National Committee on Road Safety, addressed a press conference on March 28, 2025. He highlighted the global impact of road accidents, noting that 1.2 million people lose their lives each year, while 50 million suffer injuries, resulting in economic damages exceeding USD 500 billion.

In the Lao PDR, road accidents claim an average of 1,000 lives annually, leading to socio-economic losses estimated at USD 175 million per year. These figures do not include property damage, injuries, and disabilities. Alarmingly, 80% of the fatalities involve young people, students, and working-age individuals. Key causes of accidents include speeding, drunk driving, unsafe lane changes, failure to yield, uninsured collisions, unsafe vehicles, and non-compliance with traffic regulations.

To address these issues, the Lao government has implemented the National Road Safety Strategy (2021-2030), which comprises five pillars including Safe Transport Infrastructure: Enhancing road conditions and safety measures, Safe Vehicles: Ensuring vehicle safety standards, Safe Road Users: Promoting responsible driving behavior, Safety Management: Strengthening road safety governance and Post-Accident Assistance: Improving emergency response and support systems.

National Road Safety Week is a key initiative under Pillar 4: Safety Management. It serves as a crucial platform for raising awareness, promoting road safety education, and disseminating information. The event aligns with the Law on Land Traffic, which mandates its observance during the first week of April each year.
