The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR participated in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Special Emergency Meeting regarding the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand on 28 March 2025 (held virtually), chaired by Malaysia in its capacity as the 2025 ASEAN Chair.

(KPL) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR participated in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Special Emergency Meeting regarding the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand on 28 March 2025 (held virtually), chaired by Malaysia in its capacity as the 2025 ASEAN Chair.
The meeting expressed sympathy and condolences to the people of Myanmar and Thailand affected by this disaster and reaffirmed ASEAN’s solidarity and commitment to addressing its impacts.
The meeting was reported about damage caused by the earthquake, including initial emergency needs and humanitarian assistance provided by ASEAN member states, the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre), dialogue partners, and relevant international organizations to the governments and people of Myanmar and Thailand.
Additionally, the meeting endorsed Myanmar’s proposal for the ASEAN Secretary-General to serve as the ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance Coordinator, while entrusting the AHA Centre to facilitate the ongoing relief efforts.
The meeting expressed gratitude to ASEAN member states, external partners, the United Nations, private sector entities, and all relevant stakeholders for their assistance to the affected populations.
The meeting reaffirmed ASEAN’s determination to work closely in coordinating humanitarian aid, supporting and facilitating effective and timely relief operations, with the AHA Centre playing a key role in these efforts.
