(KPL)  In a speech marking National Digital Day, Minister of Technology and Communications, Mr. Boviengkham Vongdala, outlined Laos' ambitious plans for digital transformation to bridge the digital divide and position the nation for global competitiveness in the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Highlighting the government's priority to expand internet networks to rural areas, the Minister reaffirmed efforts to develop high-quality telecommunications infrastructure, improve affordable high-speed internet, and enhance digital government platforms and public services. "Digital transformation is a global trend and a crucial mission in our industrialization and modernization journey," he stated.

The celebration of National Digital Day, established by Prime Minister's Decree No. 301 on October 31, 2023, is a key milestone in the government’s commitment to digitalization. This year’s theme, “Develop the digital infrastructure of the Lao PDR to be strong and sustainable,” aligns with the nation’s broader goals of commemorating its 70th Party anniversary, 50 years of independence, and the 105th birthday of President Kaysone Phomvihane.

Describing the transformative potential of the 4th Industrial Revolution, Mr. Vongdala emphasized the importance of modern technologies such as IoT, artificial intelligence, robotics, and blockchain. "Countries that master these innovations will gain strength and influence, while those left behind risk remaining underdeveloped," he warned.

Laos’ digital transformation strategy integrates these technologies into its socio-economic framework to create a digital economy, society, and state administration. The initiative also addresses critical challenges such as human resource development, cybersecurity, and environmental sustainability.

The Minister outlined significant progress made over the past four years under the resolution of the 11th Party Congress.

 The country now boasts 97% 2G, 85% 3G, and 78% 4G coverage, with 5G networks introduced in Vientiane Capital and four provinces.

 97,153 kilometers of fiber-optic cables have been laid, connecting 6.3 million phone numbers and 4.5 million internet accounts.

 The Ministry developed 37 government systems, including the G-Net network linking 18 ministries and 17 provinces, and public service systems such as G-Chat and remote meeting platforms.

Digital Economy and Society: Innovations include modern tax collection, e-payment systems, and distance learning platforms like L-Mooc.

Cybersecurity and Legislation: A robust cybersecurity framework and 67 legislative measures have been implemented to support the digital transformation agenda.

Mr. Vongdala urged citizens to embrace digital technology responsibly. "Let us use these tools to maximize benefits in public and private sectors, remain vigilant against online fraud, and contribute to national development goals," he said.

The digital transformation aligns with the nation’s 9th Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan (2021–2025) and aims to address key priorities, including economic and financial reforms and combating drug issues.

As Laos continues its journey toward digitalization, the Minister’s message underscored the importance of collective effort, strategic partnerships, and innovative solutions to ensure the nation's readiness for a rapidly evolving digital future.
