(KPL)The French Embassy to Laos recently hosted a reception to mark the 30th anniversary of the French Development Agency (AFD) at the French Residence. The event gathered Lao government officials, members of the international community, NGOs, and local actors, celebrating the growing Franco-Lao cooperation in fostering inclusive and sustainable development.

Since its establishment in Laos in 1993, AFD has invested over 300 million euros in nearly 90 projects across key sectors such as rural development, sustainable agriculture, cultural heritage preservation, urban development, and the management of biodiversity and water resources. These initiatives have played a crucial role in the socio-economic transformation of Laos.

French Ambassador to Laos emphasized AFD's pivotal achievements, highlighting its commitment to supporting more sustainable and resilient growth in the face of current global challenges. The Ambassador underscored the importance of a long-term vision centered on environmental protection and social inclusion.

Jean-Pierre Marcelli, AFD's Regional Director for Asia, reaffirmed this commitment, revealing that new funding agreements signed in 2024 amount to 19.6 million euros. Among the key projects are the establishment of a water flow coordination center for hydroelectric dams, a regional wetlands conservation initiative, and a women’s economic empowerment program. Additionally, the AFD will provide technical assistance to the Ministry of Mines and Energy for a feasibility study on a pumped-storage hydroelectric project using the Nam Theun 2 reservoir.

Guests at the event explored the tangible impacts of these projects through an exhibition that showcased how AFD’s holistic approach to development has benefited local communities, integrating economic, social, and environmental aspects.

The anniversary celebration not only honored past accomplishments but also outlined AFD's continued commitment to partnering with Laos in addressing climate change and sustainably managing natural resources for the future.
