(KPL/Prensa Latina) Cuba is reportedly boosting the use of photovoltaic solar energy, and is carrying out two projects since early 2024 to add 1,000 megawatts in two years to the national power grid, looking at adding the same amount of generation by 2031.

Alfredo Lopez, general director of the state-run energy company Union Electrica (UNE), told Granma newspaper that there are 26 photovoltaic solar parks in several stages of construction in all Cuban provinces, which represents a huge effort by the State.

The engineering of each park is a science, he said, and although later the result is similar, the electrical conditions in each place are not the same, which requires exhaustive work from the moment that studies begin to select the site where each one will be installed.

Scientist Lidice Vaillant, director of the Photovoltaic Research Laboratory at the University of Havana, explained that almost one million photovoltaic panels have already been installed and 3.6 million more will be installed.
