Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Maythong Thammavongsa received Anoulak Kittikhoun, the newly appointed Executive Director of the Mekong Institute, in Vientiane on September 28, 2026, to discuss the institute’s priorities and future cooperation with Lao PDR and Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries.
(KPL) The meeting took place following Mr. Anoulak’s official assumption of office on September 1, 2026. Mr. Maythong congratulated him on his appointment, noting that he is the first Lao citizen to serve as Executive Director since the Mekong Institute was established in 1996.
Mr. Maythong expressed confidence that under Mr. Anoulak’s leadership, the institute will effectively implement its 2026–2030 strategic plan and strengthen programmes in human resource development, sub-regional cooperation and sustainable development.
Mr. Anoulak thanked the Deputy Minister for the support and outlined the institute’s planned activities and priorities. He reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with Lao PDR and other GMS member countries to advance sub-regional development.
The two sides also discussed expanding cooperation in human resource development, particularly capacity building in research and innovation, digital transformation, climate change adaptation and other areas of shared priority.
The cooperation is expected to contribute to stronger regional capacity and sustainable development for communities across the Mekong sub-region.
