Senior information officials from ASEAN member states gathered in Vientiane on September 28, 2026 for the opening of the 27th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information’s Sub-Committee on Information (COCI-SCI), focusing on digital transformation, misinformation and regional media cooperation.
(KPL) Mr. Somsavath Phongsa, Director General of the Media Department under the Commission for Information and Education of the Central Committee (CIECC), said rapid advances in artificial intelligence, social media and other communication technologies are creating new opportunities while also increasing challenges related to misinformation and disinformation.
He stressed the need for stronger regional cooperation to respond to these challenges and promote reliable, high-quality information in the digital era.
The meeting provides a platform to review ongoing ASEAN information and media projects and discuss priorities under the ASEAN Cooperation in Information and Media Sector for 2026–2035.
Mr. Vansy Kuamua, Vice President of the CIECC, highlighted the role of media and information in connecting communities and supporting ASEAN integration. He said continued improvements to communication infrastructure and media services are important to meet changing public needs.
Participants are discussing progress on regional information projects, professional development for journalists and content creators, and ways to produce quality content that can counter fake news and strengthen public awareness of ASEAN.
The meeting is also expected to develop practical frameworks for future cooperation and strengthen the resilience of ASEAN’s information and media sectors as the region adapts to rapid technological change.
