(KPL) The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has issued a heavy rain warning for August 18–21, 2026, advising people across the country to remain vigilant as widespread rainfall and thunderstorms are expected.

The department said a low-pressure trough is moving across northern and central Laos, while another low-pressure system over northern Vietnam, combined with the southwest monsoon and strong winds in some areas, is expected to bring light to moderate thunderstorms to many parts of the country.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in several northern and central provinces, including Houaphanh, Luang Namtha, Bokeo, Luang Prabang, Xayaburi, Borikhamxay, Khammouane and Savannakhet over the next one to three days.

The department warned that prolonged rainfall could cause flash floods, landslides and flooding in urban and low-lying areas.

People, local authorities and organisations are advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions. Travellers crossing mountainous areas should check weather and road conditions, as well as vehicle safety, before starting their journeys.

The public is also advised to closely follow weather updates and forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
