ຂປລ Senior officials from Laos and Australia have called for deeper multilateral cooperation and stronger international partnerships as geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty continue to reshape the global landscape.

Speaking at a joint seminar hosted by the Lao Institute of Foreign Affairs and the Australian Embassy in Vientiane on June 18, 2026, Lao Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bovonethat Douangchak stressed that no country can effectively address today’s complex challenges alone. He said a stable, predictable, and rules-based international order is particularly important for developing countries to maintain peace, promote sustainable development, and create opportunities for future generations.
Australian Chargé d’Affaires Benita Sommerville echoed those views, noting that the international institutions that have supported decades of global growth are facing increasing pressure. She emphasized the need for multilateral systems that remain inclusive, adaptable, and capable of responding to challenges such as economic resilience, climate change, and regional security.
Both sides reaffirmed the strong bilateral relationship between Laos and Australia, which was elevated to a Comprehensive Partnership in 2024 and is underpinned by 74 years of diplomatic relations. Australia reiterated its commitment to supporting a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, while Laos reaffirmed its support for ASEAN centrality and constructive engagement with all partners.
The seminar brought together policymakers, diplomats, and academics to exchange perspectives on the evolving international environment and explore how multilateral cooperation can be strengthened to address shared regional and global challenges.
