(KPL) Australia and Laos on March 5, 2026 celebrated 35 years of agricultural research cooperation, announcing a new investment of A$15 million to promote sustainable agricultural development and long-term food security.

Since 1990, the Australian Government, through the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, has collaborated with Lao ministries and academic institutions on more than 150 projects aimed at improving agriculture and rural livelihoods. The partnership has contributed to advances in forestry, fisheries and the development of disease-resistant crops.

The new funding reflects Australia’s commitment to strengthening climate and environmental cooperation under the Australia–Laos Comprehensive Partnership. Over the next five years, six strategic initiatives will be implemented, focusing on sustainable forestry, climate-smart crops, resilient fisheries, evidence-based agricultural policy, sustainable poultry development, and improved access to digital market services for agricultural and cattle trade.

Dr. Nick Austin, Acting CEO of ACIAR, said the long-standing partnership demonstrates how sustained research and investment in human capacity can deliver lasting impacts.

“For 35 years, our partnership with Laos has shown how sustained agricultural research, coupled with long-term investment in people, can deliver transformative change. By building local research capability and nurturing the next generation of leaders, we are helping ensure innovation continues well beyond individual projects and strengthens food security for decades to come,” he said.

Human resource development has been a key pillar of the cooperation. More than 50 Lao researchers have completed Master’s and PhD degrees through ACIAR-supported programmes at international universities, with many now serving in leadership roles across government, academia and the private sector.

The 35th anniversary celebration was held in Vientiane and co-chaired by Dr. Linkham Douangsavanh, Minister of Agriculture and Environment; Dr. Nick Austin; and Megan Jones.

During the event, ACIAR, Australian scientists and Lao research partners were honoured with the Lao government’s Cross of Friendship and Cross of Labour in recognition of their contributions to the country’s agricultural development. Minister Linkham Douangsavanh also presented Labour Medals to experts involved in the projects.

“Together, we are building an environment where every individual has the opportunity to thrive,” Minister Linkham said. “This ongoing collaboration with ACIAR will strengthen our resilience, deepen our bilateral ties and help ensure food security for all Lao people.”
