The final business plan presentation stage of the "Forest-Based Value Chains Innovation Challenge" (2025–2026) concluded successfully on 3 March 2026 in Vientiane.
From a competitive pool of 20 finalists, 13 outstanding teams were selected to receive essential funding and technical assistance to scale their eco-friendly enterprises.
The initiative was organised by GIZ via the Protection and Sustainable Use of Forest Ecosystems and Biodiversity (ProFEB) project. It receives joint backing from the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The programme is designed to foster creative, sustainable business models across six target provinces namely: Houaphanh, Khammouane, Luang Prabang, Xayaboury, Oudomxay, and Vientiane Province.
Leadership Perspectives on Green Growth
Key officials underscored the importance of the initiative for the nation’s economic and environmental trajectory with Mr Hans-Ullrich Südbeck, German Ambassador to the Lao PDR, praising the challenge as a prime example of the "Team Europe" approach, blending German and EU expertise to support Laos’ green growth ambitions.
Mr Khamfeua Sirivong, Deputy Director General of the Department of Forestry, emphasised that environmental protection and economic development are mutually reinforcing. He noted that for conservation to be truly effective, forests must generate sustainable economic value for local communities.
Ms Malaikham Philaphone of the Department of SME Promotion highlighted the necessity of transitioning from subsistence production to market-competitive businesses, citing "innovation" as the primary driver for this evolution.
Since its launch in December 2025, the competition has attracted over 50 applications. After a rigorous screening process, 20 finalists presented their detailed plans to a nine-member judging panel. The 13 winning teams were evaluated against four core pillars: innovation, relevance, sustainability and scalability.
The 13 winners are expected to serve as national models, bridging the gap between forest conservation and modern commerce. This event marks a significant milestone in cultivating a new generation of "Green Entrepreneurs," ensuring the economy of the Lao PDR grows in harmony with its ecological systems.
The challenge was made possible through multi-sectoral collaboration, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the Ministry of Technology and Communications, the Lao ICT Development Association, and the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
